A search for the body of Samson Charles Bidan has been suspended

NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska.
A search for the body of a missing kayaker in a North Platte sand pit pond has been suspended.

Authorities have been searching for 20-year-old Tanzanian Samson Charles, also known as Samson Charles Bidan, since he went under the water Monday, and have turned from hoping to rescue the man to recovering his body.

Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer tells the North Platte Telegraph that crews are in the process of blocking flow from the pond and that if the body has not surfaced by Monday, officials will consider again sending a sonar boat out to search.

Rescuers were first called to the area around 7:20 p.m. Monday after two of three kayakers on the North Platte River were shunted by the current into the sandpit and overturned. One kayaker reached safety; Charles, a 7-foot tall member of the North Platte Community College basketball team, did not.
